Water Crisis Intensifies

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on May 31, 2010

KATHMANDU, 31 May 2010 (IRIN) – Access to safe drinking water is deteriorating across parts of Nepal, activists say, despite the prevailing monsoon season from May until September.

According to the Federation of Drinking Water and Sanitation Users Nepal, a national network advocating water and sanitation rights, half the country now faces drinking water shortages.

Although a study has yet to be conducted on the current scenario, water experts claim more than 20 districts in both the hills and Terai areas of the country have been badly affected.

“This situation could affect a large number of families who have already been reeling under the immense water shortage situation over the last many years,” Ajaya Dixit, director of the Nepal Water Conservation Foundation told IRIN.

According to government statistics, more than 4.4 million people in the Himalayan nation do not have regular access to safe drinking water in rural and urban areas, be it via piped water, wells, rainwater or bottled water. Read the rest of this entry »

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on May 31, 2010

NAIROBI, 31 May 2010 (IRIN) – Bangladesh, Indonesia, Iran and Pakistan top a new ranking of countries at “extreme risk” of experiencing natural disasters compiled by a global risk assessment company.

The Natural Disaster Risk Index (NDRI), released on 27 May by Maplecroft, ranks 229 countries according to the human impact of natural disasters in terms of deaths per annum and per million of population, plus the frequency of events as well as the likelihood of earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, storms, flooding, droughts, landslides, extreme temperatures and epidemics. Asia accounts for most of the disaster-related deaths since 1980.

Ranking countries most vulnerable to natural disasters over the past 30 years could enable businesses and investors to identify risks to international assets while supporting humanitarian efforts to push governments into investing in disaster risk reduction initiatives. Ruling parties misinterpreting Friday night pact: UCPN (M)

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on May 31, 2010

The Unified CPN (Maoist) has urged the main ruling parties CPN (UML) and Nepali Congress to implement the three-point agreement reached on Friday night. The Maoist party has also complained that the ruling parties are trying to interpret the agreement according to their convenience.

A meeting of the Maoist standing committee held at party headquarters Paris Danda Monday morning made the call to the ruling parties, concluding that the pact should be implemented right away in order to build trust among the parties for establishing politics of consensus.

“The statements of ruling parties on the agreement have made us serious,” Maoist spokesperson Dina Nath Sharma said after the meeting, alluding to the arguments of some leaders of NC and UML that Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal would step down only when the Maoists implemented the past agreements and after there is an agreement on the integration and rehabilitation of Maoist combatants. Ruling Parties in Nepal have Betrayed Again

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on May 30, 2010

As expected by many, again the ruling parties including the prime minister have breached the agreement reached the other day. Now they are repeating the same conditions as they were puting forth in pre-May 28 period for the resignation of the prime minister. Yesterday, many independent and pro-ruling party papers and many radios had published/aired that “an immediate resignation of the prime minister” was one of the three agreements. Many papers even published that he is supposed to resign within five days. Right today, secretary and one of the influential leaders of the UML (the leading ruling party) Mr. Padeep Gyawali party told over the BBC Nepali radio that there is no conditions for the resignations of the prime minister and the PM would resign immediately. This is the second breach within a month period from the prime minister–earlier the prime minister did not resign as agreed even when the Maoist party met the condition putforth (i.e., the calling off of the general strike) by the prime minister. The Maoist party should also learn that whisperings and closed door meetings with the reactionaries will backfire (Maoist chairperson had dealth with the other ruling party leaders in closed door situations and many times he had one-to-one closed door meetings this time too) as such deals do not leave the proof for people to act on later.

The goverment rewarded the ex-old army chief Katuwal and many another army officers who have been in the blacklist of violating human rights during the peoples movement few years ago.
Such situations will force the Maoist leadership to go back for a revolt (or to a surrender, which is less likely in the case of Nepal now).
