Michelle Obama Wears Prabal Gurung Dress, Fallon Necklace on ‘Oprah’

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on January 31, 2011

First Lady Michelle Obama appeared on “Oprah” Jan. 27 wearing a sleeveless fuchsia Prabal Gurung sheath dress and Fallon “Victoria Royal” necklace, that had the designers celebrating with congratulatory tweets.

Obama, who has worn Gurung for important occasions before, slipped on the chic and simple fitted dress for a poignant and somewhat somber episode of Oprah Winfrey’s popular talk show.

The First Lady, along with former NBC news anchor Tom Brokaw and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Bob Woodward, appeared to bring attention to American soldiers injured or lost in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as their surviving families.

Winfrey, who said she was persuaded by Brokaw to produce the episode, called it a “wake up call” for Americans to engage more with military families and injured war veterans.

Gurung saw the photo (above) of the First Lady and Winfrey circulated before the appearance and sent off tweet praising Fallon designer Dana Lorenz.

“First lady is wearing @fentonfallon with my dress n I love it coz Dana is a friend of mine,” Gurung tweeted. “So glad we can share this moment yay!”

Lorenz tweeted back, “Seriously, it’s like the most ultimate and amazing combination ever-love you.” She followed that tweet with another: “It’s also going to a very moving show and you know how we tend to be overwhelmed watching O. Now O + O.”

The duo than tweeted back and forth about collaborating, leading Elle magazine to speculate the necklace-dress pairing by Obama could lead to a more formal relationship between the designers.

The First Lady might approve: She’s also a Lorenz fan, having worn an elaborate Fenton-Fallon necklace for a televised July 4 special last year. Her capsule collection for J. Crew was inspired by a piece the First Lady wore on a Glamour cover.

Obama, who wore Rachel Roy to this week’s State of the Union address, wore a stunning red gown by Gurung to last year’s White House Correspondents’ dinner.

Meanwhile, read about what designer Oscar de la Renta had to say when the First Lady wore Alexander McQueen to a state dinner.
