Brit Awards 2012: Winners In Full – Adele, Ed Sheeran Big Winners, Rihanna, One Direction, Blur Also Win Brits

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on February 21, 2012

Adele has proved that her Grammy haul 10 days ago was no lucky fluke, winning two of the major awards at this year’s Brit Awards.

The London singer was straight off the mark, winning the first Brit of the night – for British Female Solo Artist, and then capped the night with the award for Best British Album, for 21.

The talent behind the record-breaking album said nothing made her prouder than to win the award for Best Album, which she received from a pleasantly emotional George Michael.

She was given her first gong by Kylie Minogue, whom Adele said made “her feel like a drag artist”, because of their height difference, particularly as Adele was looking splendidly glamorous in heels.

She said, “It’s been an amazing year,” and thanked her record company for “letting me be the artist I’ve always wanted to be”. She also thanked “all the girls out there”.

Ed Sheeran, the most nominated artist of the night with four nods, picked up the Award for Best British Male Solo Artist, and also Best British Breakthrough Act.Bruno Mars was another early winner, for Best International Male, while Rihanna collected the Best International Female Artist for the second year in a row.

And One Direction seemed lost for words, winning their first Brit just over a year after winning hearts on X Factor, for Best British Single based on downloads and airplay, for the pop ballad What Makes You Beautiful.

Coldplay brought their haul of Brits to six, with an award for Best British Group. Chris Martin told the crowd the band used to appear at the Brits back in the day when it was rubbish – surely not – and he was pleased they were still here, having as much fun as ever, now the Brits was fabulous.

The ever-popular Foo Fighters picked up the award for Best International Group, although there was no sign of them in person, nor the iconic Dave Grohl even appearing on the acceptance video.

The Best International Breakthrough Act was Lana Del Rey, whose debut album Born to Die went to the top spot in the US in its first week of release. The New Yorker looked stunning in a scarlet dress, and thanked everyone in the UK for their support. seemingly overwhelmed by the occasion.

Already announced before the ceremony were the awards for Critics Choice – won by Emeli Sande – and the Outstanding Contribution to Music, given to Blur, who were last at the Brit Awards 17 years ago, and took to the stage for a resounding 11-minute set at the end of the night.
