Scientists plan visits to the darkest deeps and the starriest skies

stairway-to-brand-heaven-and-hellTwo of 2013’s most exciting scientific projects share an astonishing technological sophistication but set off for destinations that could hardly be more different. One, HADES, will send the robot submersible Nereus 10km (6 miles) down beneath the sea to survey the strange life forms found in the sunless abyss of one of the Earth’s deepest ocean trenches. The other, Gaia, will launch a satellite equipped with a powerful pair of telescopes 1.5m kilometres up into the heavens to chart a billion stars of the Milky Way.

First off will be HADES (Hadal Ecosystems Studies Programme), which in March will begin exploring the 10km-deep Kermadec trench off New Zealand. Despite pressures 1,000 times greater than at the surface, the submersible will find plenty to see. Alan Jamieson, a marine biologist from the University of Aberdeen and one of the HADES leaders, has already sent “landers” down deep trenches around the world. Each is a ballasted metal tripod carrying cameras and bait to attract animals. Seven kilometres down, Dr Jamieson has found “supergiant” amphipods, related to the sand hoppers common on the seashore but, at 30cm long, 20 times bigger. Deeper still, hordes of smaller amphipods scurry about in the blackness. “At 10km they turn up in thousands and just devour anything. They look like a swarm of bees,” Dr Jamieson sa Read the rest of this entry »

Jodie Foster Gay: Actress Comes Out At Golden Globes 2013

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on January 15, 2013

The Huffington Post  |  By

Jodie Foster ended years of rampant media speculation when she casually came out of the closet while accepting her Cecil B. Demille award at the Golden Globes Sunday night.

After being introduced by Robert Downey Jr., Foster coyly said, “While I’m here being all confessional, I just have the sudden urge to say something I’ve never been able to air in public. A declaration that I’m a little nervous about. Not quite as nervous as my publicist, huh, Jennifer? But uh, you know, I’m just going to put it out there. Loud and proud. I’m going to need your support. I am — single!”

She then took a more serious turn, noting, “I already did my coming out about a thousand years ago, back in the Stone Age. In those very quaint days when a fragile young girl would open up to trusted friends, and family, coworkers and then gradually, proudly, to everyone who knew her.”

Throughout her occasionally long-winded yet stirring speech, Foster, 50, went on to speak about privacy and its general absence in Hollywood — a luxury that, to her, seems like a distant past. She took more than a few digs at oversharing, joking she was “not Honey Boo Boo” before adding, “If you had to fight for a life that felt real and honest and normal against all odds, then maybe you, too, would value privacy above all else.” Read the rest of this entry »

UFO Sightings At International Space Station On The Rise (And You Can Help Find Them) (VIDEO)

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on January 14, 2013

By Lee Speigel

As 2012 ended and 2013 began, numerous UFOs were reported around the country — nothing earthshattering there — but what about alleged unidentified objects seen in space near the International Space Station (or ISS), a couple of hundred miles above Earth?

Videos have cropped up on YouTube showing images taken by NASA cameras of objects of different shapes, some moving very slowly, others rapidly hurtling through space.

What, exactly, are we looking at here? Alien spacecraft dropping by for a visit with the ISS? Reflections from ISS windows? Meteors? Or various types of orbiting or fast moving spacecraft-generated debris?

On Christmas Day, YouTube poster Streetcap1 recorded video of a silvery object, moving slowly near the curvature of Earth. At :46 into the following video, the object can be seen in faraway perspective.

Space alert: Hazardous asteroid nears Earth

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on January 10, 2013

alert-hazardous-nears-asteroid.nAll eyes are set at the skies as a big hazardous asteroid is nearing Earth. According to scientists there is an actual possibility that the 300-meter-wide Apophis will eventually strike our planet, but the catastrophe is not imminent.

On Wednesday the dangerous space traveler is passing Earth at 14 million km – the distance which raises no concerns. Apophis near approach, which may have been observed around 00:00 GMT, was traced by Slooh Space Camera.

The asteroid is planning a series of come backs of which the one in 2036 is said to be most threatening.

Named after the Ancient Egyptian evil demon, Apophis was discovered in 2004. The initial estimations indicated the probability that in 2029 the asteroid would strike Earth. However, additional calculations lessened this possibility and postponed it till 2036.

According to NASA scientists in 2029 Apophis may pass through a gravitational keyhole which would change his orbit causing imminent collision with Earth in 2036.

Russian scientists are planning to plant the asteroid with a radio beacon to trace its orbit and the risks Apophis pose to our planet. But the mission will only take place after 2020. Read the rest of this entry »

Piers Morgan Petition Gets White House Response: Remember First Amendment

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on January 10, 2013

Piers Morgan
The White House responded to the petition to deport Piers Morgan in a statement defending freedom of speech on Wednesday.

Morgan has been an outspoken critic of the country’s gun policies in the wake of the Newtown shooting. Gun advocates launched a petition on the White House website, which called for the British host to be deported. The petition surpassed the thresholdnecessary for the White House to respond — 25,000 signatures — in December. Read the rest of this entry »

Stephen Hawking’s The 71st Birthday

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on January 9, 2013

Stephen Hawking, Cambridge, Jason Bye, 19/09/08Sitting in a wheel chair since the age of 28 due to paralysis because of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) related motor neuron disease, Stephen William Hawking, (born 8 January 1942) became world renowned theoretical physicist, cosmologist, and author. He can’t speak thus he communicates through a speech generating device with a vocal supporter of the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics.

His doctor told him that he won’t survive long because in the world ALS survival for more than 10 years after diagnosis is uncommon. however now he is 71 years.

Among his significant scientific works have been a collaboration with Roger Penrose on gravitational singularities theorems in the framework of general relativity, and the theoretical prediction that black holes emit radiation, often called Hawking radiation. Hawking was the first to set forth a cosmology explained by a union of the general theory of relativity and quantum mechanics. He is a vocal supporter of the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics.

He is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, a lifetime member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, and a recipient of thePresidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award in the United States. Hawking was the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge between 1979 and 2009. Read the rest of this entry »
