How Not to Treat the Buddha

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on July 30, 2013

A hotel in France with a “Little Buddha” room that includes a toilet cover with Buddha’s image. The hotel, Moulin de Broaille in the Burgundy region of central France, went a step too far when it used toilet covers bearing an image of the Buddha’s head, This hurts about 500 million Buddhists all over the world and strongly condemnable act.

BEIJING — Would you be offended by a toilet seat cover sporting an image of Jesus? Or Muhammad?

Some Thai Buddhists are upset that Buddha’s image is being taken in vain by “foreigners” who, they say, see it as a philosophical and not a religious symbol and don’t give Buddha the respect he deserves.

These sentiments flared anew last week after reports of a hotel in France with a “Little Buddha” room that includes a toilet cover with Buddha’s image.

The hotel, Moulin de Broaille in the Burgundy region of central France, went a step too far when it used toilet covers bearing an image of the Buddha’s head, The Bangkok Post reported last week, citing “Thai Buddhists” in a story titled “Buddhists Enraged by Toilet in France.” (The hotel didn’t respond to an email requesting comment.) Meet Fuji, The 3-Year-Old Photographer Who Will Steal Your Heart (PHOTOS)

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on July 30, 2013

Nigerian photographer Onafujiri “Fuji” Remet made a name for himself earlier this summer when his work was showcased in a Lagos exhibition.

Aside from his curious eye and ability to capture the color and motion of Nigerian street life, Remet received attention for his miniature stature — he is three years old after all.

Yes, you read that right. Little Fuji learned to man a Sony SLR before most of us could spell our names. His photos capture everything from street vendors to family portraits, from an unusually pint-sized vantage point.

Fuji’s early initiation to the art world can be attributed to his creative family. His father and two older sisters are artists as well. At present, the ambitious young photographer has 3,000 images to his name, according to Visual News. Not bad for a toddler, but Remet’s father has even bigger hopes for his budding child prodigy.

“I hope he grows up to become a larger than life photographer, who’ll explore his natural platform to impact remarkably on the course of humanity,” he told CNN.

Although Fuji may be one of the youngest artists we’ve featured on The Huffington Post Arts&Culture page, he is certainly not the only youngun to explore his creative side. Six-year-old Shorya Mahanot shows a striking resemblance to a young Jackson Pollock while eleven-year-old Autumn de Forest works in a pop art state of mind. Read the rest of this entry »

Asia’s Nobel Prize for fighting Nepal’s flesh trade

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on July 25, 2013

charimaya Tamang3

ramon32KATHMANDU, July 24 While thousands of Nepali girls and women continue to struggle in red light hell in some corner of the country or abroad, a team of survivors of a similar fate who are fighting endlessly for the rescue of other victims of the flesh trade, has been nominated for the highly prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award.
Shakti Samuha is among the five latest winners of the award, which is considered Asia´s equivalent of the Noble Prize.

But even at the moment of glory, the eyes of team members are moist and their smiles not free of pain. Chairimaiya Tamang and Sunita Dunuwar, two of the 15 women who founded Shakti Samuha in 2000, could not stop empathising with many other Charimaiyas and Sunitas who are waiting to be rescued from a living death of satisfying the lust of many every single day. The two were informed this morning about the selection for the Magsaysay, which will fetches them $50,000.

“We were so soaked in the darkness of that hell that it is always there deep inside us. And we feel deep in our hearts that countless Nepali girls and women are still trapped in that situation, although a smile might often break in our faces,” said Tamang. Read the rest of this entry »

Latest Parenting Trend: The CTFD Method

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on July 19, 2013

By David Vienna, Screenwriter, playwright and author of

ParentingI know many people want to stay current with the latest parenting trends — attachment parenting, minimalist parenting, Tiger Mother parenting, et al. Well, I’ve stumbled upon a new technique that will guarantee your child grows up to be an exemplary student and citizen. It’s called CTFD, which stands for “Calm The F*ck Down.” And that’s not a message to give your kids. It’s for you.

Using CTFD assures you that — whichever way you choose to parent — your child will be fine (as long as you don’t abuse them, of course). To see it in action, here are some sample parenting scenarios and how CTFD can be employed:

  • Worried your friend’s child has mastered the alphabet quicker than your child?Calm the f*ck down.
  • Scared you’re not imparting the wisdom your child will need to survive in school and beyond? Calm the f*ck down.
  • Concerned that you’re not the type of parent you thought you’d be? Calm the f*ck down.
  • Upset that your child doesn’t show interest in certain areas of learning? Calm the f*ck down.
  • Stressed that your child exhibits behavior in public you find embarrassing? Calm the f*ck down.

Yes, using the CTFD method, you’ll find the pressure lifted and realize your child loves you no matter what, even if they’ve yet to master the alphabet. You’ll also learn that whether or not you’re the best parent in the world, as long as you love your child, they’ll think you are and that’s what matters. Plus, CTFD makes you immune to those that prey upon the fears of new parents, like pseudoscientists and parenting authors.

To use CTFD, just follow these simple steps:

  1. Calm the f*ck down.
  2. There is no second step. Read the rest of this entry »

The Top Five Ways to Turn Money into Happiness

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on July 5, 2013

By Guy Kawasaki, Advisor at Motorola Mobility

In their new book, Happy Money: The Science of Smarter Spending (Simon & Schuster), Elizabeth Dunn and Michael Norton (professors at the University of British Columbia and Harvard Business School, respectively), offer five key principles to help us get more happiness out of the money we spend — principles which also help companies create happier employees and customers.

Most people know they can benefit from expert help to make more money. But oddly enough, they’re quite sure they already know how to spend their money to reap the most happiness. As a result, they follow their intuitions, using their money to buy things they think will make them happy, from televisions to cars to houses.
What’s the problem with this approach? A decade of research demonstrates that people’s intuitions about how to turn money into happiness are misguided at best and dead-wrong at worst. Those televisions, cars, and houses? They have almost no impact on our happiness.
The good news is that we now know what kind of spending does enhance our happiness–insight that’s valuable to consumers and companies alike. Here are the top five ways to turn money into happiness according to Dunn and Norton: Read the rest of this entry »

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on July 4, 2013

Read the rest of this entry »
