FORMER prime minister Julia Gillard is cashing in on her Altona home, and dozens of sticky beaks were poking around her property when it opened for inspection for the first time.
Investors were also among the 100-strong crowd on Saturday to inspect the property at 9 Medford St.
A queue stretched almost to the end of the driveway when the house opened 15 minutes ahead of schedule at 3.15pm.
Cathy Meilak, from nearby Altona Meadows, said: “If I had the money I’d buy it tomorrow.
“I may sell my other couple of properties I have for this one.”
Anne Tabone, an Altona resident of 68 years, anticipated the Gillard factor would impact the price: “I like that house, I’m willing to pay eight.”
Leah George, a first-home buyer looking in the area, was unaware of the vendor’s identity at first.
“For us it’s a bit of a put off, because it will probably go for more,” said Ms George, who liked the floorboards but didn’t like the floorplan.
Real estate agent Anna Grech, from Jas Stephens Williamstown, said Ms Gillard would be pleased with the turnout.
“A lot of comments generally from buyers about the (natural) light,” Ms Grech said.
An analysis of the house by WBP Property Group revealed if it sold at the lower end of the anticipated sales range at auction on December 14, Ms Gillard would pocket as much as $500,000 above her initial purchase price of $140,000.
WBP director Greville Pabst said many factors influenced property value, and a celebrity association could have an “intangible effect on the sale price”.
“The former status and high profile of the owner is likely to lend positive influence to the property,” Mr Pabst said
