Vladimir Putin’s multibillion-dollar, triple-decker war room revealed

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on November 22, 2015

“Gentlemen. You can’t fight in here. This is the war room!”

It could have been a scene straight out of “Dr. Strangelove” when President Vladimir V. Putin stepped into the Russian Ministry of Defense’s brand new, three-tiered, multibillion-dollar control centre this week, for a war briefing that had its fair share of movie-like pageantry.

The fortified National Control Defense Center was Putin’s first stop after officials confirmed that the Russian charter jet crash that claimed 224 lives last month was the result of an act of terror.

In case of a war, the centre would be Russia's premier communications centre.© Druzhinin/REX Shutterstock In case of a war, the centre would be Russia’s premier communications centre. On movie-theatre-size screens, live broadcasts showed long-range strategic bombers taking off from Russian air bases to fly sorties over Syria. Putin instructed commanders in Syria to “make contact with the French and work with them as allies” as Russia seeks a central role in a proposed anti-terrorist coalition. Inspiration: From teenage guerrilla to top athlete

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on November 14, 2015

By Chris Haslam

Ten years ago Mira Rai was a teenage guerrilla, wanted by Nepal’s government. Now she’s the country’s most successful runner.

Mira

Behind a steel gate on a dusty side street in Kathmandu, there’s a rather good bar. It’s run by the Belgian consulate and offers a superb selection of rare Trappist beers.

It’s an odd place to meet Nepal’s next sporting superstar, a former child soldier who ran away from home to escape a life of repression and has since risen to the top of one of the most extreme sports on Earth.

Two things strike you upon meeting this young athlete. First, there are those eyes – twinkling with self-amusement at an absurd life. Secondly, there’s the fact that Mira Rai is a woman. Read the rest of this entry »

Inspiration: Alibaba Singles’ Day Sales Reach $14.3 Billion, Smashing Record (Video)

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on November 14, 2015

Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. logged a record 91.2 billion yuan ($14.3 billion) in sales on Singles’ Day, turning a sweethearts’ holiday dreamed up two decades ago into a major online shopping event.

Transactions had passed last year’s record of $9.3 billion before midday in China, according to the company. The top-selling items by retailers using Alibaba’s platform included baby-related and nutritional products, Nike sneakers and Levi’s jeans, the company said.

Chairman Jack Ma raised the stakes this year by moving the event’s headquarters to Beijing, bringing in more foreign brands and enlisting Hollywood celebrities Daniel Craig and Kevin Spacey to add glamour to the shopathon. Tapping into rising disposable incomes has paid off for China’s biggest e-commerce emporium as it captures more of the country’s surging smartphone use with restaurant deliveries and video streaming. gorkha

Read the rest of this entry »

Read the rest of this entry »
