Stephen Hawking’s 1966 doctoral thesis made available for first time

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on October 24, 2017

He now holds 12 honorary degrees – and then moved to Cambridge to undertake research in cosmology. From 1979 to 2009 he was the Lucasian professor of mathematics at the university – a post once held by Isaac Newton.

His 1988 A Brief History of Time became one of the most successful popular science books ever published, with more than 10m copies sold worldwide in more than 40 languages.

Hawking

Anyone in the world can now download and read the doctoral thesis of a 24-year-old Cambridge postgraduate student, written in 1966; how many will fully understand Properties of Expanding Universes is another matter.

Stephen Hawking hopes that giving free access to his early work will inspire others, not just to think and learn but to share research. He said: “By making my PhD thesis open access, I hope to inspire people around the world to look up at the stars and not down at their feet; to wonder about our place in the universe and to try and make sense of the cosmos.

“Anyone, anywhere in the world should have free, unhindered access to not just my research, but to the research of every great and inquiring mind across the spectrum of human understanding.” Read the rest of this entry »

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on October 5, 2017

2 weeks Europe tour (12 – 30 September) was with magnificent achievements. Major activities:

  1. Handed over 9 page research report written to British Museum Director Hartwig Fischer and UK Prime Minister HE Theresa May to correct British Museum erroneous information on World Peace Symbol Buddha’s birthplace to Nepali ambassador to UK HE Dr. Durga Bahadur Subedi.

British Museum story on Buddhas birthplace:

Because of thousands of suggestions through social media to correct the erroneous information on World Peace Messenger Buddha’s birthplace within few days, British Facebook Page on 7th of November, 2011 wrote:  In the spirit of clarity, the British Museum wants to be unambiguous and accurate on this issue – the Buddha was born in Lumbini which is in Nepal. The Museum is always seeking to find the clearest way to put past history into understandable statements in the Museum, on our website and in our online records. Thank you for your feedback. Please be assured this is an important issue to the Museum and has been passed on to our curatorial team to establish where further clarity in the Museum and online may be required.

After query British Museum South Asia Collection curator Dr. Sona Datta wrote to me in a letter, “The information panel that you question on the Life of the Buddha and that was previously on display in our Gallery 33, which houses our main displays of the cultures of South Asia, refers to the Buddha’s birthplace at Lumbini. It does not, however, state that Lumbini is in Nepal.  Our wording was unintentionally ambiguous, which we regret.  We have created new signage that has been on view as of 11 December, 2011.

The panel now reads: Read the rest of this entry »

Nepal’s Kathmandu valley treasures: Before and after

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on May 12, 2015

A Nepalese army personnel stands in front of a collapsed temple a day after an earthquake in Bhaktapur, Nepal (April 26, 2015)
A view of the collapsed Vatsala Durga temple in Bhaktapur

As well as the devastating loss of human life in Saturday’s earthquake, Nepalis, and the world, have lost parts of the country’s unique cultural heritage.

Irina Bokova, the Director-General of the UN’s cultural organisation, Unesco, said there had been “extensive and irreversible damage” at the world heritage site in the Kathmandu valley.

Seven monument zones in the valley make up the world heritage site.

The three urban zones at the site are Durbar squares – meaning “noble courts” – in the settlements of Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Patan.

Ms Bokova describes these three complexes as “almost fully destroyed”.

The four other zones are religious sites: Buddhist stupas [monuments] at Swayambhunath and Boudhanath and Hindu temple complexes at Pashupatinath and Changu Narayan.

Unesco said in a statement that it would be sending international experts to assess the damage to the sites in the Kathmandu valley.

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on May 12, 2015

baburam smiley

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on December 17, 2014

Read the rest of this entry »

11 Mesmerizing 3D Chalk Art Masterpieces That Will Melt Your Brains

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on June 1, 2014

By Priscilla Frank

There are few joys quite like turning an everyday sidewalk into a gaping cave cascading with rainbow waterfalls. To achieve such an uncanny phenomenon, you can either experiment with some seriously hallucinogenic substances, or stumble across the visual treasure trove that is three-dimensional chalk art.

In the past few years the grassroots art form of 3D chalk has become a medium to be reckoned with. As the visual amalgamation of optical illusions, hyperrealism and public street art, the accessible technique appeals to pretty much everyone. Aside from its hypnotic affect and impressive technique, chalk art rules because the subject matter can truly be anything. Take a look at our roundup below, which includes everything from a giant snail to a game of Pac-Man. Just try and tell us this isn’t the most democratic, and psychedelic, art form out there.

Behold, 11 truly awesome works of 3D chalk art to bring out the weird kid inside.

These days, a beautiful photo of a sandwich isn’t just a beautiful photo of a sandwich, and a snazzy photo of a Mercedes isn’t just a snazzy photo of a Mercedes. They’re porn, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

It’s not quite clear when we started using the word “porn” to describe all things visually appealing. But here we are, and if you can’t beat them, join them with a massive ranking of porn types, I guess? Here they are in order of greatness.

What Your Earwax Says About You

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on February 19, 2014

BA3462-001

A new study suggests earwax is not the same between races, with some people having more odor-causing chemical compounds in their earwax than others.

The number of volatile organic compounds, which are molecules that often produce a smell, is generally higher in Caucasians than in East Asians, found researchers from the Monell Center.

“Our previous research has shown that underarm odors can convey a great deal of information about an individual, including personal identity, gender, sexual orientation, and health status,” study researcher George Preti, Ph.D., an organic chemist at Monell, said in a statement. “We think it possible that earwax may contain similar information.” Read the rest of this entry »
