Program: A Global Volunteer Program to fight Malnutrition
Among the Earth Quake Victim Children in Nepal

1Introduction: A destructive earthquake of 7.9 magnitude hit Nepal, ruining lives and destroying infrastructures on Saturday 25 April 2015. This killed over 8000 people and injured over 19,000. This huge earth quake was again followed by almost 300 aftershocks, which toppled homes forcing millions of people to take shelter into open spaces in temporary camps. The affected people of that devastated area were still in the panic, another powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 struck on May 12, 2015 just after two weeks. The situation darned gigantically and has become unmanageable.

Millions of people have been struggling simply to protect themselves from the sun and rain in the open spaces, surviving on stale, rotten and unhealthy food. As people are facing the aftermath of this disaster, the water supplies are running low and food is scarce. The risk of waterborne diseases is growing rapidly and thousands of children with severe malnutrition are in need of proper food and treatment. With the monsoons only a few weeks away, children face greater risk of disease and infection. Read the rest of this entry »

KATHMANDU — By his third day waiting for a helicopter, Namgyal Sherpa got restless. He had left Kathmandu last week with seven friends and 3,000 kilos of food — rice, lentils, instant noodles, salt, and oil — and hoped to deliver it to the village of Laprak, which is near the epicenter of the earthquake that killed more than 8,100 people.

“There wasn’t enough relief aid going to the village,” Namgyal, 31, told BuzzFeed News. “So we wanted to send supplies to Laprak not only because it was home to many of our boys, but also because it wasn’t getting attention like other places.”

Saugat Bista: Nepali boy seeks to be youngest film director (Video)

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on December 9, 2014

Film sets can be quite unnerving for children, but Saugat Bista is very comfortable in such settings. In fact he is in control of what happens in the studio or outdoors.

Saugat BistaThis eight-year-old from Kathmandu has already directed a feature film and has his eyes set on the Guinness World Records to become the world’s youngest film director.

A student of Class II at Suryodaya School, Saugat’s film ‘Love You Baba’ is due to be released at movie theatres across Nepal this December.

Once that happens and his claim is accepted by Guinness, he will replace current record holder India’s Kishan Srikanth who directed ‘Footpath’ (2006) when he was just nine years old.

While Srikanth’s film told the story of an orphaned boy who wants to go to school, Saugat’s venture deals with the struggles of father as he attempts to raise his 10-year-old daughter alone.

“When I asked my father if I could direct a film he checked online and found that a nine year old from India had already done it. That gave him the confidence that I could also make an attempt,” Saugat told a gathering at the film’s launch last month.

Big Solar Storm Heading Toward Earth This Weekend

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on September 13, 2014

By Jacqueline Howard

n-SOLAR-STORMS-largeNot just one, but two strong solar flares burst off the sun’s surface this week — and now Earth is getting hit with the aftermath.

While the solar storm headed our way may affect power lines, radio transmissions, communication systems and satellites to a small degree, scientists say it’s nothing to worry about.

We’re not scared of this one,” Tom Berger, director of the Space Weather Prediction Center in Boulder, Colorado, told the AP.

A strong X1.6-class solar flare erupted from a sunspot on Wednesday, following a previous flare that blasted out of the same spot on Monday, LiveScience reported. Just check out the action captured by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory in the video below.

NASA scientists said that a small flare was also spotted on the left corner of the sunThursday morning, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Due to these significant solar events, two waves of highly energized solar material from the eruptions have traveled our way and are now expected to impact the Earth. In fact, the National Weather Service has issued a “geomagnetic” storm watch until Saturday, Sept. 13.

Geomagnetic storms can cause some problems for the (power) grid but are typically very manageable,” Bill Murtagh, space weather forecaster for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, told USA Today. “We may also see some anomalies with satellites so satellite operators around the world have been notified. And problems with the accuracy of GPS have been observed with this level of storming.”

Minor issues aside, radiation from solar flares can’t pass through Earth’s atmosphere to physically harm humans and these recent storms should not endanger satellites and astronauts in space, reported.

There may even be an upside to the solar storm. Scientists say we may see an increase in beautiful auroral displays in the sky.
