Pakistan Arrests Multiple C.I.A. Informants Involved In Bin Laden Raid, Say Sources

WASHINGTON — Pakistan’s intelligence service has arrested the owner of a safe house rented to the CIA to observe Osama bin Laden’s compound before the U.S. raid that killed the al-Qaida leader, as well as a “handful” of other Pakistanis, a U.S. official said late Tuesday.

In Pakistan, a Western official confirmed a New York Times report that five of the Pakistani informants who fed information to the CIA before the May 2 raid were arrested by Pakistan’s top military spy agency.

The officials spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive intelligence matters. A spokesman for the Pakistani spy agency declined to comment.

The Times, in an article posted on its website late Tuesday, said detained informants included a Pakistani army major who officials said copied the license plates of cars visiting bin Laden’s compound in Pakistan in the weeks before the raid.

The fate of the CIA informants who were arrested was unclear, but American officials told the newspaper that CIA Director Leon Panetta raised the issue when he visited Islamabad last week to meet with Pakistani military and intelligence officers.

U.S.-Pakistani relations have been strained over the raid by Navy SEALs on Pakistani territory, which was a blow to Pakistan’s military, and other issues. Officials said the arrests of the informants was just the latest evidence of the fractured relationship between the two nations. Read the rest of this entry »

UN rights chief wants ‘full facts’ on bin Laden killing

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on May 6, 2011

OSLO — UN human rights chief Navi Pillay on Thursday called for “a full disclosure of the accurate facts” to determine the legality of the killing of Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

“I’m still for a full disclosure of the accurate facts,” Pillay told reporters in Oslo.

“I think it’s not just my office but anybody is entitled to know exactly what happened,” she added.

Pillay’s declarations come a day after US Attorney General Eric Holder told a Senate hearing the raid during which bin Laden was killed “was lawful and consistent with our values.”

“The United Nations condemns terrorism but it also has basic rules of how counter-terrorism activity has to be carried out. It has to be in compliance with international law,” she said.

“For instance, you’re not allowed (…) to commit torture or extra-judicial killings,” she explained.

The White House’s changing story over the attack has raised doubts about US assurances that the US special operations forces sent to bin Laden’s lair in the Pakistani garrison town of Abbottabad were prepared to take him alive. Read the rest of this entry »

Osama Bin Laden Was Unarmed During Navy SEAL Raid, Says White House

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on May 4, 2011

Firstly, better not to kill anybody even in the war if possible. Secondly, it could be better even for USA just to capture rather than to kill him for more possible information. Thirdly, even according to information provided Osama was not with arm. So he was killed and not captured? Lots of unnecessary debates and doubts in this case undoubtedly.

President Asif Ali Zardari has hit back against American accusations that his country secretly sheltered Osama bin Laden, who was killed on Sunday night, and has claimed Pakistan played a role in leading US special forces to the al-Qaida leader.

“Some in the US press have suggested that Pakistan lacked vitality in its pursuit of terrorism, or worse yet that we were disingenuous and actually protected the terrorists we claimed to be pursuing,” Zardari said.

“Such baseless speculation may make exciting cable news, but it doesn’t reflect fact.” Read the rest of this entry »
