Wikileaks Nepal Document: Gachchhadar offered bribe to PAC member to approve aircraft deal

A US diplomatic cable leaked recently by Wikileaks has revealed that influential Nepali politicians including Deputy Prime Minister and chairman of Madhesi Janadhikar Forum (Loktantrik) were actively lobbying for either Airbus or Boeing while making decision to purchase two new aircraft for the national flag carrier Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC).

The Government of Nepal is unlikely to guarantee the Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC) loan to purchase two Airbus aircraft, according to Finance Secretary Khanal, essentially killing the deal and reviving Boeing’s hopes to sell its aircraft to the NAC. The European Union continues to lobby aggressively for Airbus, most recently by sending a strongly-worded letter to the Prime Minister urging him to complete the Airbus purchase immediately (full text in para 8).
