Why Qatari Owners of Paris’ Soccer Team Hanker For Aging Englishman Beckham

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on December 22, 2011

By BRUCE CRUMLEY

Los Angeles Galaxy's David Beckham fights for the ball against Emelio "Chieffy" Caligdong of the Philippines national football team Azkals during their friendly match at the Rizal Memorial football stadium in Manila December 3, 2011.

Why does perennially under-performing Paris Saint-Germain of France’s anemic professional soccer league see hiring a fading star at over $1 million per month as vital to assuring its future? Because the aging player in question is David Beckham, whose marketing and financial allure is considered as important as his footballing skill by PSG’s Qatari owners. And even if Beckham’s representatives are denying reports that the Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder has come to an unofficial agreement with PSG, there are reasons to suspect the resurgent rumors may yet come to fruition. After all, the Paris club is only one part of a mix with which Qatari VIPs are looking to boost the Emirate’s prestige through the world’s most popular sport. And despite his advancing age and slowing gait, Beckham remains not only one of the biggest global draws in the game—but just the kind of meta-star capable of mesmerizing celebrity-crazed, sports-fickle inhabitants of Paris.

French media was again abuzz Wednesday with reports that the 36-year-old Beckham has agreed to sign an 18-month contract with PSG once his Galaxy deal expires Dec. 31. According to dailies le Parisien and l’Equipe, Beckham has accepted a league-topping $1.05 million monthly salary whose total value could be nearly doubled by $22.3 million in performance bonuses—most of those based on Beckham’s merchandizing potential, rather than footballing potency. Indeed, in addition to Beckham’s iconic and hunk status that’s expected to broaden PSG’s appeal to a far wider base of Parisians (a population infamous as fair weather fans who demand big matches, lots of glitz, and the likelihood of victory to even start caring much about sports), the association with the former England hero might well allow Paris Saint-German to finally establish a true brand identity abroad. And that, it’s hoped, could mean millions in new income from PSG jerseys selling alongside the likes of Liverpool, Bayern Munich, and Barcelona merchandize in foreign markets–particularly in Beckham-mad Asia. Simon Cowell, The Messiah: Quarter Children Think X Factor Boss Born On Christmas Day

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on December 21, 2011

One in four children think Christmas Day celebratesSimon Cowell‘s birthday, while nearly a quarter think God was born in Essex, a survey has found.

The same number of five to seven-year-olds also thought Jesus was born either at 10 Downing Street or Buckingham Palace, with more than a third not even knowing whose birthday it is on Christmas Eve.

The survey, conducted by Woolworths.co.uk, found children’s perception of Christmas populated with celebrities. More than a third (35%) of the youngsters could not name a single one of Father Christmas’ reindeer. Of the children questioned, 12% thought singer Tulisa was the name of a reindeer. Other names suggested were:

And they fared no better when it came to identifying the three wise men, either. More than a third thought Gary BarlowMark Wright from reality show The Only Way Is Essex (TOWIE) and Prince Charles were the gift-bearing visitors in the nativity scene. In a sign of the times, 30% presumed these “wise men” heard about the birth of Jesus through Facebook.

Other interesting facts included 28% thinking Lapland was a nightclub and 35% never having heard of Rudolph before.

Woolworths spokesperson said: “Christmas is such a special and magical time of year for children, so it’s surprising that there is so much confusion going around.

“Obviously Christmas means different things for different families but it’s a big shock that 35% don’t even know who Rudolph is.

“We’re not saying that celebrity culture has ruined the traditions of Christmas but from these results it certainly seems to have had an effect on how children think about the big day!”

Rebecca Loos Given ‘Six-Figure Sum’ For Beckham Affair Story, Thurlbeck Alleges

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on December 12, 2011

Former News of the World chief reporter Neville Thurlbeck has defended the public interest of publishing stories which alleged that David Beckham had cheated on his wife and F1 boss Max Mosley had taken part in a “Nazi orgy”.

Mr Thurlbeck was fired by News International in September after being arrested in April on suspicion of hacking phones while working at the now-defunct Sunday tabloid.

He told the Leveson Inquiry into press standards that he would not comment on phone hacking.

Instead, he was questioned about the justification of publishing so-called “kiss and tell” stories.

In the case of David Beckham’s alleged affair with Rebecca Loos, Mr Thurlbeck said there was a “huge public interest” in going to print.

“He was sponsored left, right and centre,” he said. “He was always promoting himself with his family as a happy modern man. It was a wholesome image that the family cultivated and the public bought into on a massive scale, and we exposed that as a sham.”

He said that although the average payment to the source of a front-page article was “£15,000 to £20,000”, Ms Loos was paid “a six-figure sum”.

According to law enforcement sources, Beckham was driving a black Cadillac on the 405 Freeway near Torrance, CA yesterday morning … when he rear-ended a gold Mitsubishi that was broken down in the carpool lane.

We’re told the driver of the Mistubishi had to be taken to the hospital, but Beckham did not require medical attention.

Law enforcement sources tell us Beckham was not arrested or cited on the scene.

A call to Beckham’s rep was not returned.

UPDATE: Sources close to Beckham tell us his son Brooklyn was in the car at the time of the accident, but that he and David were both not injured.
