Satellite Wars: China unveils ‘cheaper’ answer to GPS

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on December 28, 2012

navigation-photo-beidou-facebookcom.nChina’s rapidly-expanding rival to GPS, called BeiDou, has become available to customers across Asia-Pacific for the first time. It aims to claim a fifth of the satellite services market in the region in just three years.

Previously, the satellite constellation was only used by the country’s military and government services. Now, it is being commercialized.

“The services now available include positioning, navigation, timing and short messages for China and surrounding areas. We hope BeiDou conquers 15 to 20 percent of the satellite services market in the Asia Pacific by 2015,”BeiDou spokesman Ran Chengqi announced at a press conference in Beijing, reported by Xinhua news agency.

China says that as it expands worldwide, the state-funded navigation system will bring in revenues of more than $60 billion a year.

At the moment, a user receiving BeiDou’s signal can determine their position to within ten meters. Most civilian GPS users are given positional data that is out by no more than 2 meters, but BeiDou’s makers say their services will be much cheaper than those of the US-government owned GPS.

BeiDou, which is the Chinese term for the Big Dipper star, is also expanding at an impressive rate, meaning it will soon be able to bridge the performance gap. Read the rest of this entry »

Amie Neely, Teacher, Accused Of Having Sex With Foreign Exchange Student

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on November 19, 2012

A suspicious husband used the GPS capability on his wife’s cellphone to find the 38-year-old teacher having sex with a 16-year-old boy.

Amie Neely now faces a felony sexual assault charge after being arrested by Port St. Lucie, Fla. police early Sunday morning, according to TC Palm.

WPBF reports that the boy was an exchange student living with Neely and her husband at the time of the alleged assault. There is also another exchange student still taking up residence there, according to the station.

There is no indication that Neely, who teaches at Community Christian Academy, ever taught the student she’s accused of assaulting.

The boy told cops he drove Neely to an area near St. Lucie West Centennial High School. He said he got in the back seat with Neely and, as the two were having sex, the teacher’s husband walked up to the car and discovered them. Read the rest of this entry »

Marius Borg Høiby, Norwegian Prince, Posts Instagram Photos, Potentially Puts Royal Family At Risk

The Huffington Post  |  By

It’s the Rich Kids of Instagram, Norwegian Royals edition.

The 15-year-old son of Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit has been sharing personal photos — 133 in all — of family holidays and other events on Instagram, potentially putting the royal family at risk, according to security blog Naked Security.

The teenager, Marius Borg Høiby, is the princess’ son from a prior relationship. The photos include GPS information that could reveal the location of the family.

According to the popular Norwegian newspaper Verdens Gangphotos taken on Marius’ phone through the popular mobile app have been available online. The photos have since been taken down.

“This has major significance for the security around the royals,” said Petter Gottschalk, a professor at the business school Handelshøyskolen BI, in an interview with both VG and Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK) on Wednesday. “This is a security scandal, and I’m surprised that this could be so open. The royal staff and the royal police escorts should have been aware of this.”

The royal couple took the significant step of writing a letter to the paper, criticizing editors for a “speculative” story that overstated the danger.

“We react strongly that you are exposing our child in this manner. For us, it’s very important to shield our children against an undsciplined public spotlight because we believe it can be a heavy burden and damaging. All children have a right to be protected against that,” the princess and husband Crown Prince Haakon wrote. Read the rest of this entry »
