Julian Assange Australia Senate Run Announced

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on March 17, 2012

CANBERRA, Australia — WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange plans to run for a seat in the Australian Senate in elections due next year despite being under virtual house arrest in England and facing sex crime allegations in Sweden, the group said Saturday.

The 40-year-old Australian citizen is fighting extradition to Sweden. He has taken his legal battle all the way to Britain’s Supreme Court, which is expected to rule on his case soon.

“We have discovered that it is possible for Julian Assange to run for the Australian Senate while detained. Julian has decided to run,” WikiLeaks announced on Twitter.

Assange has criticized Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s center-left government for not standing up for him against the potential threat of his extradition to the United States for prosecution over WikiLeaks’ release of hundreds of thousands of classified U.S. documents. WikiLeaks Founder Extradition Appeal Granted

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on December 18, 2011

Making his activities weak clearly means that people from all over the world will not have enough right to have information to be informed:

LONDON — Britain’s Supreme Court said Friday it had agreed to hear WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange’s appeal against extradition to Sweden over sex crimes allegations.

The court said a panel of three judges had considered a written submission and granted a two-day appeal beginning on Feb. 1, meaning there is no prospect of Assange being sent to Stockholm until at least next year.

In a statement, the court said it had “decided that seven justices will hear the appeal given the great public importance of the issue raised, which is whether a prosecutor is a judicial authority.”

Assange’s legal team argue that police and prosecutors – like the Swedish prosecutor seeking to bring Assange back to the country for questioning – are not a proper judicial authority, and shouldn’t have the right to order extraditions.

Earlier this month, High Court judges John Thomas and Duncan Ouseley said Assange could apply to the Supreme Court to argue that point and seek to prove that Europe’s process of carrying out extradition was flawed.

However, Thomas warned Assange that his chance of success “may be extraordinarily slim.”

Julian Assange’s WikiLeaks: Ten Days That Changed The World

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on December 5, 2011

Black cloud in Julian Assange’s life?:

As Julian Assange continues his fight against extradition to Sweden, a collaborator tells for the first time the story of the group that gathered a year ago to prepare the biggest leak in the history of journalism.

By Natalia Viana

Thirteen months ago, Julian Assange and his WikiLeaks were still relatively unknown. They had never made the headlines in Brazil, where I live, and even less in the Amazon, where I was doing freelance reporting at the time. Secret US documents were the last thing on my mind when I was first contacted on November 14, 2010.

“Hello Natalia, I’m with a very influential organization, and I wanted to offer you a job,” said a female voice who claimed to have worked with me some years ago. “We are working on a huge project that is going to have enormous repercussions around the world. All my phones are tapped, so it’s not safe to tell you details. But I am sure that any journalist would like to be involved,” she explained.

It sounded like something straight out of a James Bond movie, but I was hooked. I called Gavin MacFadyen, a common friend and a director of the Centre for Investigative Journalism in London, who told me I should trust the woman. So off I went, with no time to think or pack, which resulted in a very bad selection of clothes, some of which were to become famous. To London, with only an address where I should meet her. No names, no details, no questions.

As I arrived at the airport in London, I tried my best to sound blasé, since I had no reasonable explanation for being there: “I’m only on vacation, I’m going shopping,” I told the immigration officer. It worked.

WikiLeaks Founder Released From British Prison on Bail, Says ‘I Hope to Continue My Work’

By JIM SCIUTTO, LEE FERRAN, KAITLYN FOLMER and MARY PLUMMER

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange emerged from a London prison with his hand raised today, into the bright lights of camera flashes after he posted $315,000 bail stemming from sexual assault charges.

In his first appearance since his arrest early this week, Assange thanked his supporters for helping to raise the bail. He said his lawyers waged a “brave and ultimately successful fight… in the face of great difficulty and diversion” to free him.

“It’s great to smell the fresh air of London again,” he said. Assange thanked the British court system, saying, “If justice is not always the outcome, at least it is not dead yet.”

Assange said his time in solitary confinement gave him a chance to reflect on people being held in worse conditions around the world.

“And with that, I hope to continue my work and continue to protest my innocence in this matter,” Assange said.
