Olympic Medal Count Map: London 2012 Totals By Country, Population, Wealth (INTERACTIVE MAP)

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on August 5, 2012

Ranking nations by total Olympic medals isn’t really the best way to judge relative success at the London Olympics. Some countries have a lot more people — or a lot more money — than others. With 530 athletes representing the United States and just two in London on behalf of Somalia, context is important.

See what the world map of winners looks like when we take population or GDP into account.

This map is updated every time a medal is awarded. Hover on a country to see more. Read the rest of this entry »

UFO Over Olympics Opening Ceremony: A Classic Flying Saucer [VIDEO]

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on July 30, 2012

alk about an uninvited guest at the Olympics.

Friday night’s spectacular pyrotechnics display of the most watched opening ceremony in summer Olympics history attracted more than the eyes of over 40 million people. A clearly seen unidentified flying object was videotaped making its way over London’s Olympic stadium, reports Examiner.com.

The disc-shaped object is first seen entering the upper left portion of the video as the fireworks erupt over the stadium. The UFO — which appears to have a dome or bulge rising from its center — moves slowly across the sky as if deliberately observing the light-show spectacle below it.

While NBC Olympics — a division of NBC Sports — has chosen Goodyear blimps for all of its 2012 Olympics aerial coverage, the strange-looking object that appeared over the opening ceremonies doesn’t appear to be a blimp.

On an evening that included an apparent Queen Elizabeth and 007 agent James Bond parachuting out of a helicopter into the Olympics stadium, most people probably wouldn’t have been surprised if a staged UFO was also on the entertainment menu, just two weeks after the U.K. released its most recent batch of UFO documents. London 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on July 28, 2012

As far as most people are concerned, the 2012 London Olympics officially begin on Friday with the highly-anticipated Opening Ceremony helmed by Oscar-winner Danny Boyle. That some of the events have already taken place (including a thrilling comeback by the U.S. women’s soccer team) won’t detract from the “Isles Of Wonder”spectacle unfolding at the Olympic Stadium in London. Mitt Romney Walks Back London Olympics Criticism (UPDATE)

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on July 27, 2012

By

Mitt Romney, in his first trip abroad as the presumptive GOP presidential nominee, is trying to walk back comments he made questioning London’s Olympics preparation — comments that have drawn a sharp response from Prime Minister David Cameron.

The dustup began Wednesday, as Romney, who ran the 2002 Salt Lake City games, said there were “disconcerting” signs in the days before this year’s games.

G4S Security Firm Increased Olympic Management Contract By £50m Before Staffing Shambles

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on July 14, 2012

Olympic Stadium G4s

The firm at the centre of the Olympic security row saw its contract to manage civilian staff increase by more than £50m over the past two years, it was reported on Friday.

With just two weeks to go until the opening ceremony, the Government has been forced to draft in an extra 3,500 military personnel to protect London 2012 venues after private company G4S admitted it might not be able to provide enough guards.

Former Army chief General Lord Dannatt issued a plea for spectators at the Games to show their appreciation to the troops, some of whom have recently served in Afghanistan and are facing possible job losses as the forces are cut back.

Lord Dannatt told BBC2’s Newsnight: “When you see those soldiers checking your bag, checking your ticket, remember they would have been on leave and just say thank you to them.”

On Friday, confidential papers obtained by the Daily Telegraph indicated that the fee charged by G4S for “programme management” rose dramatically as the number of staff required grew.

The security firm have fallen short on their obligations for security staff

G4S was initially contracted by Games organiser Locog in 2010 to provide 2,000 security staff for £86 million, but that figure has since risen to 10,400 personnel in a contract now worth £284m. The Daily Mail reported that the people employed will include A-level students.
