Sarkozy ‘Received £42m From Gaddafi To Fund 2007 Election Campaign’

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on March 12, 2012

Everything possible in politics:

French President Nicolas Sarkozy received £42m to fund his election from former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, it was claimed today.

Published on investigative website Mediapart, a governmental briefing note refers to several visits to Libya by Sarkozy’s election team.

The documents make specific reference to Ziad Takieddine, a middle man in huge arms and petrol contracts between France and various Middle Eastern countries.

It is claimed Takieddine went to Tripoli 11 times to supervise the transaction in 2005, “the year where a payment of €50m (£42m) would have been concluded between the Libyans and Sarkozy camp.”

It also claims Brice Hortefeux, Sarkozy’s long time friend, advisor, and later interior minister, “intervened personally” in the financial operations. According to Mediapart, Hortefeux has denied any involvement in the events. Read the rest of this entry »

Saif Al-Islam Captured In Southern Town Of Obari Close To Niger

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on November 19, 2011

Saif al-Islam, Colonel Gaddafi’s son and the heir apparent, has been captured, according to officials from the National Transitional council (NTC).

Gaddafi was reportedly arrested in the town of Obari, near Sabah in the south of Libya by militia forces. Reports suggest that Saif and his colleagues were ambushed.

According to Reuters, the European Union has urged Libyan authorities to make sure Gaddafi stands trial at the international criminal Court (ICC).

The 39-year-old captive is wanted by the ICC for crimes against humanity; however the NTC has yet to confirm whether Gaddafi will be handed over to international authorities or made to stand trial in Libya.

Luis Moreno Ocampo, a prosecutor for the ICC said: “The good news is that Saif al-Islam is arrested, he is alive, and now he will face justice.”

Marek Marczynski of Amnesty International also urged the NTC to transfer Gaddafi to the court in the Netherlands:

Gaddafi Son Saif Al-Islam Headed To Mali, Official Says

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on October 27, 2011

Everybody wants tom be in safe side:

DAKAR, Senegal — Moammar Gadhafi’s intelligence chief who is wanted by Interpol fled to Mali overnight after making his way across Niger where he has been hiding for several days in the country’s northern desert, an adviser to Niger’s president said Thursday.

The official, who could not be named because of the sensitive nature of the matter, said that Abdullah al-Senoussi entered Mali late Wednesday via the Kidal region, which shares a border with Niger. He is guarded by a unit of about a dozen people and arrived in a convoy piloted by ethnic Tuaregs from Mali.

The adviser said that Gadhafi’s hunted son, Seif al-Islam, is also on his way to Mali and is traveling across the invisible line separating Algeria from Niger. The area, a lawless expanse of dunes stretching for hundreds of miles, has been used for years by drug traffickers as well as an offshoot of al-Qaida and has nearly no government presence.

Gaddafi Arrest Warrant Issued By International Criminal Court

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on June 28, 2011

THE HAGUE, Netherlands — International judges ordered the arrest of Moammar Gadhafi on Monday for murdering civilians, as NATO warplanes pounded his Tripoli compound and world leaders stepped up calls for the Libyan leader to end his four-decade rule.

The International Criminal Court said Gadhafi, his son Seif al-Islam Gadhafi and his intelligence chief Abdullah al-Sanoussi are wanted for orchestrating the killing, injuring, arrest and imprisonment of hundreds of civilians during the first 12 days of an uprising to topple Gadhafi from power, and for trying to cover up the alleged crimes.

The warrants from the court in The Hague turn the three men into internationally wanted suspects, potentially complicating efforts to mediate an end to more than four months of intense fighting in the North African nation. The warrants will be sent to Libya, where Gadhafi remained defiantly entrenched.

Presiding judge Sanji Monageng of Botswana called Gadhafi the “undisputed leader of Libya” who had “absolute, ultimate and unquestioned control” over his country’s military and security forces. She said there were “reasonable grounds to believe” that Gadhafi and his son are both responsible for the murder and persecution of civilians. Read the rest of this entry »
