KATHMANDU: Nepal won a membership at the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the next three years term starting from January 1, 2013.

The 67th session of UN General Assembly on Thursday elected Nepal as one among 18 new countries entering the UN principal organ.

“It’s a great achievement we made in the UN,” Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Narayan Kaji Shrestha, speaking from Indonesia, told THT over phone.

“It shows the international community still wants to see Nepal in global forums,” he added.

Along with Nepal, Albania, Benin, Bolivia, Canada, Colombia, Croatia, Haiti, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Mauritius, Netherlands, San Marino, South Africa, Sudan, Tunisia, Turkmenistan and the United States have also made it to the 54-member UN organ.

Nepal was one among four countries that was chosen for the forum from Asia-Pacific region this year, securing support from three more countries other than Saudi Arabia, which maintained support from 128 UN member states.

ECOSOC, considered as the most influential UN organ after the Security Council, is responsible for coordinating economic, social and environmental works of 14 UN specialised agencies, their functional commissions and five regional commissions.

It looks after issues of sustainable development, MDGs and upliftment of poorer countries, among others.

“The election to the ECOSOC seat is not only the matter of pride, Nepal will have more say in designing and implementing the ECOSOC programmes,” said Arjun Bahadur Thapa, spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Read the rest of this entry »
