The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have won an injunction in a French court preventing celebrity magazine Closer from publishing further paparazzi shots of the duchess sunbathing topless.

Mondadori France, Closer’s publishing company, will be fined €10,000 per day if it publishes any more photographs following Tuesday’s judgment or transmits them to any third party via email or any other means.

Mondadori, owned by former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi, will also have to pay €2,000 towards legal fees as part of the ruling following a civil action.

A court in Nanterre, near Paris, opened a separate criminal investigation on Tuesday into charges that Closer and a photographer breached the privacy of the duke and duchess by publishing the topless photos. Read the rest of this entry »

Silvio Berlusconi To Resign Following Approval Of Austerity Measures

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on November 8, 2011

Silvio Berlusconi will resign as Italian prime minister once austerity measures currently making their way through parliament have been approved, it has been reported.

Earlier on Tuesday he won a vote on the country’s budget but lost his majority in the lower house of parliament.

Tuesday’s vote came as pressure mounted on the embattled leader to resign, with his key coalition partner Umberto Bossi urging the 75-year-old to stand down.

308 deputies voted for the motion, eight short of a required absolute majority of 316, after Italy’s opposition parties abstained and a number of MPs from Berlusconi’s coalition defected.

Yields on Italian 10-year bonds hit euro-era record highs of 6.767% on Monday. Rumours that the prime minister was preparing to stand down saw markets bounce, a clear indication that investors saw the scandal-hit 75-year old as a main block to reform.

Eurozone Crisis: European Markets Rally As Eurozone Plan Boosts Confidence

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on October 27, 2011

We have to be happy for the agreement, but needs to be careful for the implementation and effectiveness:

Europe’s main stock indices fought back strongly on Thursday as markets gave a vote of confidence to eurozone leaders’ “grand plan”.

At close, the FTSE 100 was up 2.98%, the German DAX up 5.35% and the French CAC40 up 6.28%.

The latter two indices have been dragged down by continuing fears over the solvency of the continent’s banking sector, and banks led the recovery as dual measures to cut Greece’s debt by 50% and to pump more than €100bn into recapitalisations buoyed confidence.

The STOXX Europe 600 Banking Index – a composite of bank stocks in Europe – was up 8.92%.

The euro hit a seven-week high of 1.41 against the dollar, with traders forced to unwind bets taken against a deal being reached.

Many traders had been squaring off positions ahead of the summit on Wednesday night, with most having little faith in a comprehensive package, but few willing to go long into such a critical meeting. The plan, while still short on detail, beat their limited expectations.

The man who screwed an entire country

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on June 11, 2011

The Economist

The Berlusconi era will haunt Italy for years to come

SILVIO BERLUSCONI has a lot to smile about. In his 74 years, he has created a media empire that made him Italy’s richest man. He has dominated politics since 1994 and is now Italy’s longest-serving prime minister since Mussolini. He has survived countless forecasts of his imminent departure. Yet despite his personal successes, he has been a disaster as a national leader—in three ways.

Two of them are well known. The first is the lurid saga of his “Bunga Bunga” sex parties, one of which has led to the unedifying spectacle of a prime minister being put on trial in Milan on charges of paying for sex with a minor. The Rubygate trial has besmirched not just Mr Berlusconi, but also his country.

However shameful the sexual scandal has been, its impact on Mr Berlusconi’s performance as a politician has been limited, so this newspaper has largely ignored it. We have, however, long protested about his second failing: his financial shenanigans. Over the years, he has been tried more than a dozen times for fraud, false accounting or bribery. His defenders claim that he has never been convicted, but this is untrue. Several cases have seen convictions, only for them to be set aside because the convoluted proceedings led to trials being timed out by a statute of limitations—at least twice because Mr Berlusconi himself changed the law. That was why this newspaper argued in April 2001 that he was unfit to lead Italy. Read the rest of this entry »

Aisha, Gaddafi’s only daughter

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on March 23, 2011

Aisha Gaddafi lives up to her reputation in the Arab press of being the “Claudia Schiffer of North Africa”, says Cassandra Jardine.

You would think that Aisha Gaddafi had nothing else to think about these days apart from shaping her eyebrows. While

her elder brother Saif looks dishevelled and sounds almost as crazed as his father, she stands amid the crowd in her father’s compound, Bab al-Azizia, looking immaculate. Apart from the fact that she has stopped dying her hair blonde and now wears a veil, she lives up to her reputation in the Arab press of being the “Claudia Schiffer of North Africa”.

Given her glamour and Gaddafi’s need to present an attractive face to the world, his favourite child and only daughter should be as familiar an inhabitant of the pages of Hello as Queen Rania of Jordan. In January there was a brief and tantalising rumour that she had had an affair with Silvio Berlusconi which turned out to be no more than flippant speculation by an Italian newspaper. But apart from one widely reproduced picture in which she sports acres of tumbling blonde locks and a trout pout, she rarely ventures into the public eye. Read the rest of this entry »
