BRAVERY MEDAL FOR GURKHA WHO FOUGHT OFF 30 TALIBAN IN AMBUSH

A HERO who took on Taliban attackers under overwhelming odds believing he was about to be killed yesterday received one of the highest military honours for bravery.

Corporal Dipprasad Pun was presented with the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross by the Queen for his part in seeing off 30 heavily armed insurgents.

His award is second only to the Victoria Cross, Britain’s highest honour for bravery in the face of the enemy.

Cpl Pun, 31, was spurred on by the belief he was going to die and so had nothing to lose when he took on the attackers who overran his checkpoint in Afghanistan.

The NCO from 1st Battalion, Royal Gurkha Rifles, fired more than 400 rounds, launched 17 grenades and detonated a mine to thwart the Taliban assault on his position near Babaji in Helmand Province last September.

After exhausting all his ammunition, he used the tripod of his machine gun to beat off a militant who was climbing the walls of the compound, shouting as he did so the Nepali threat “marchu talai” – “I will kill you.”

Undoubtedly people are suffering from lots of problems due to the recession. Inflation, job cuts, benefit cuts etc are becoming everyday’s major news. Even job hunters are struggling to get jobs. Claimants figure reached almost 2.5 millions in UK. People’s purchasing capacity, therefore, is decreasing drastically and businesses are either going down or closing down terribly. In this situation it is not difficult to imagine people’s feelings if they endure with cheatings in different ways. And this is not an imagination, but the reality and happening in many ways in everyday life.

A case of this month is going to be presented. A passenger was cheated by a company while travelling from Ashford to Woolwitch Arsenal on 14^th of February. The passenger had Rail Card and showed it while buying the ticket. He was travelling before 10.00 am and due to the rush he did not notice the price. When the passenger checked the ticket while travelling by train, he found two different tickets with different prices: one with £26.20 and the other with £15.80. After seeing two different tickets with different prices, he had feeling that something was wrong.
