sentence in Britain, cables obtained by WikiLeaks show.

In August 2009 when he was prime minister, Mr Brown attempted to strike a deal during a face-to-face meeting with the US ambassador, arguing that Mr McKinnon’s medical condition meant he would commit suicide if he was extradited.

Mr McKinnon, 44, suffers from Asperger’s syndrome, an autism spectrum disorder.

His appeal was rejected by the Obama administration, which demanded that Mr McKinnon should be tried and serve any sentence in the US, where he faces up to 60 years in prison.

David Cameron, the prime minister, has yet to say whether he will agree to the demands.

The US government alleges that between February 2001 and March 2002 Mr McKinnon hacked into dozens of US Army, Navy, Air Force, and Department of Defence computers, as well as 16 Nasa computers. Read the rest of this entry »

President Yadav dissatisfied with PM’s series of foreign trips

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on November 30, 2010

President Ram Baran Yadav has expressed dissatisfaction with Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal for his series of foreign trips at a time when the nation is going through a difficult time, Annapurna Post daily reported.

At a meeting in Shital Niwas Monday, President Yadav advised PM Nepal to take initiative to forge consensus among the parties and end the political deadlock instead of focusing on foreign trips.

PM Nepal had gone to meet the President to apprise him of his trip to Cambodia to start Tuesday. He is leaving for Cambodia´s capital Phnom Penh Tuesday to attend the sixth International Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP).

Soon after returning from Cambodia, PM Nepal is going to Belgium to chair a meeting of the Least Developed Countries (LDC)s. He had visited Russia last week for the Global Tiger Summit.

I had expected you would initiate dialogues among political parties and strive to end the ongoing political crisis after you returned from Russia, but then you are going on a foreign trip again, the President’s press advisor quoted the President as saying. Read the rest of this entry »

Nepal awaits WikiLeaks’ dossiers with bated breath

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on November 30, 2010

Newkerala: By Sudeshna Sarkar, Kathmandu, Nov 30 : Whistleblower WikiLeaks’ disclosure of confidential US documents could cause Nepal’s history of its 10-year insurgency and the transition from monarchy to a republic to be rewritten, once – or if – over 2,000 confidential documents relating to the country are made public.

The Himalayan nation began a vigil Tuesday, awaiting revelations about its own behind-the-scene terrorist, political and diplomatic deals following the discovery that the website had also obtained 2,278 memos sent by the US Embassy in Kathmandu to the US State Department in Washington through a lengthy period of 1996 to February this year.

The Nepal documents are not among the initial 251,287 cables posted by WikiLeaks despite a warning by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that the leaks were an attack on the international community.

The WikiLeaks memos on Nepal mainly revolve around the Maoist insurgency, the political upheaval followed by King Gyanendra’s attempt to grab power with the help of an army-backed coup and the subsequent overthrow of his government due to a nationwide uprising.

What is WikiLeaks in fact?

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on November 30, 2010

These days WikiLeaks is hot cake all over the world due to lots of very sensitive information leaks. In fact what is WikiLeaks?

WikiLeaks is an international non-profit media organization that publishes submissions of otherwise unavailable documents from anonymoussources and leaks. Its website, launched in 2006, is run by The Sunshine Press.[1] Within a year of its launch, the site claimed a database that had grown to more than 1.2 million documents.[3]

The organization has described itself as having been founded by Chinese dissidents, as well as journalists, mathematicians, and start-up company technologists from the U.S., Taiwan, Europe, Australia, and South Africa.[1] Newspaper articles and The New Yorker magazine (7 June 2010) describe Julian Assange, an Australian Internet activist, as its director.[4]

WikiLeaks has won a number of awards, including the 2008 Economist magazine New Media Award.[5] In June 2009, WikiLeaks and Julian Assange won Amnesty International‘s UK Media Award (in the category “New Media”) for the 2008 publication of “Kenya: The Cry of Blood – Extra Judicial Killings and Disappearances”,[6] a report by the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights about police killings in Kenya.[7] In May 2010, the New York Daily News listed WikiLeaks first in a ranking of “websites that could totally change the news”.[8]

In April 2010, WikiLeaks posted video from a 2007 incident in which Iraqi civilians were killed by U.S. forces, on a website called Collateral Murder. In July of the same year, WikiLeaks released Afghan War Diary, a compilation of more than 76,900 documents about the War in Afghanistan not previously available for public review.[9] In October, the group released a package of almost 400,000 documents called theIraq War Logs in coordination with major commercial media organisations. Britain

Prince Andrew criticised a variety of governments, including those of Britain and America, as corrupt, stupid and backward in a conversation with a US diplomat.

CLIMATE CHANGE: All about the money in Cancun

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on November 29, 2010

JOHANNESBURG, 29 November 2010 (IRIN) – Money to help countries adapt to climate change could be a key deal

Photo: Abdul Majeed Goraya/IRIN Defining who is vulnerable to climate change will be a hot issue

breaker when the two-week UN conference gets underway on 29 November in Cancun, Mexico, say climate policy experts.

“The Adaptation Track text [at the UN climate change negotiations] is very near agreement and is likely to be approved in Cancun, provided the financing is also agreed,” said Saleemul Huq, lead author of the chapter on adaptation in the fourth assessment report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Some of stumbling blocks in funding an adaptation package – designed to help developing countries cope with the impact of climate change such as high level sea rise and more intense and frequent cyclones – are transparency in the delivery of funds, balancing the money allocated for adaptation, mitigation and accountability, and deciding who gets how much.

Countries have only another two years to draw up a deal, as the first commitment phase of the Kyoto Protocol to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) addressing global warming, expires in 2012.  Read the rest of this entry »
