Olympic Security: SEND IN THE TROOPS

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on July 12, 2012

Theresa May has told MPs angry over the Olympics “security shambles” that the government was only made aware of gaps in the number of guards provided by G4S on Wednesday.

The home secretary told the Commons that ministers had been receiving assurances from G4S over the last few days, but the “absolute gap in the numbers was only crystallised finally yesterday”.

Defence Secretary Philip Hammond has confirmed that an extra 3,500 troops will be deployed to cover the Games, many of whom are supposed to be on leave after returning from Afghanistan.

Keith Vaz, the Labour chairman of the Commons Home Affairs Select Committee, told May: “G4S has let the country down and we have literally had to send in the troops.”

Theresa May Reveals UK Border Agency To Be Broken Up After Revelations Of Lax Immigration Checks

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on February 20, 2012

The UK Border Agency (UKBA) is to be broken up after further revelations of relaxations of checks on immigrants to Britain, Theresa May has told the Commons on Monday afternoon.

The UK Border Force – which physically runs the checks on travellers at airports and Eurostar terminals – will be split from the UKBA, because Theresa May believes managing all the operations is “too great for one organisation.”

The decision, which comes into effect on the 1st of March, is likely to cause a significant shakeup to the policing of Britain’s borders. Theresa May told MPs: “Many of the changes I’ve outlined cannot happen overnight. They will take time, but we will make them as quickly as possible.”

The decision comes in the wake of a report by John Vine, the independent inspector of the UK Border Agency, who was called in to investigate the lapses in passport checks which led to the resignation of Brodie Clark. The former head of the UK Border Force was accused of exceeding the terms of a pilot scheme over the summer, which reduced some checks on passengers. Damian Green: We Only Want The ‘Brightest And Best’

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on February 2, 2012

Immigrants must “add to the quality of life in Britain” to be let in, the Immigration Minister will say on Thursday.

Damian Green will say Britain does not need more middle managers or unskilled labour and only wants the “brightest and the best” migrants as the Government strives to be more selective in its immigration policies.

It is time to move away from the debate over numbers and ask “how we can benefit from immigration”, he will claim.

The government has pledged to cut net migration from the current 242,000 to the “tens of thousands” last seen in the 1990s, with crackdowns on forced and sham marriages, bogus students and an annual cap on immigrants coming from outside the EU.

The Immigration Minister will say that bringing in any migrants who would be economically dependent on the state or who can “play no role in the life of this country” is unacceptable.

Instead “everyone who comes here must be selected to make a positive contribution”, he will say.

And new specialist routes will be developed further to improve the visa system for short-term business visitors and entertainers, encouraging world-class performers to come to Britain. Read the rest of this entry »

London 2012: 100 Arrests Ahead Of Olympics As May Says Tents Should Be ‘Banned’ From All Games Sites

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on January 25, 2012

All these because we farmed war and not love:

Almost 100 people have been arrested ahead of the Olympics and all tents and encampments should be banned from the Games, the home secretary has said.

But the Olympic organisers have not yet imposed a total ban, saying only that they will work with the Home Office to prevent encampments “if necessary”.

The Occupy protests seen at St Paul’s Cathedral and other sites around the UK, in which large amounts of tents are pitched for long periods of time, have raised concerns that similar tactics could be used at the London Games.

The Home Office is keen to avoid such scenes at the Olympics, and on Wednesday May suggested that tents and other similar items should be banned from the Games.

In her speech on Olympic security planning at the Royal United Services Institute, Theresa May said that with six months until the Games police and security teams were preparing for “all eventualities” and work was continuing behind the scenes.

Calling out “encampment protests” as a specific new threat that would be tackled before the games, May said she was confident police were taking a “robust attitude” to organised crime.

The Met’s anti-crime push ahead of the Olympics is led by Operation Podium. Read the rest of this entry »
